I’ve always been told that anthropomorphism, our desire to attribute human traits, emotions, and intentions to non-human entities, is just plain wrong, fictitious, even imaginary. But, countless times during my 40 years as a practicing veterinarian, I’ve had unexplainable, ethereal interactions with my patients.
For years, I had a house call practice and a clinic in my home. I practiced alone. I was able to perform any procedure I needed to without the help of an assistant if I explained what was going to happen, and why, to my animal patients. They would then lie quietly on the exam table and allow me to insert IV catheters, inject local anesthesia, clean and even suture wounds, trim nails, anything which I felt would help them.
They must have understood.
Dr. Shor’s amazing book, Soul of the Wild, book ll: The Wisdom of Elephants, has helped me to understand that what I have long known in my heart is indeed true.
This book opened my mind and heart to the possibility to communicate with elephants (or any other animal) at the soul level, and the messages that animal species are trying to communicate to humans. There is a considerable amount of information on elephant behavior and their families, woven in with very clear messages for humans about the environment and how to coexist with wild animals.
There is so much shared about how elephants work together, their desire for cooperation with humans, and their vision for the future. To me, the book represents a new paradigm where humans set aside the focus on full dominance and dominion over animals and replace it with one of openness and cooperation. I found the book inspiring and exciting.
As a beginner animal communicator, I love this book. Anyone who has spent time with elephants will appreciate not just their intelligence, but deep empathy.
